As I sit here and think about an e-book I just read I try and figure out what people have against guns. Their arguments against guns and why guns (or handguns at least) should be banned. First I’m gonna state the obvious. The Bill of Rights is exactly that. A Bill of Rights, things that American Citizens are entitled to. Not a list of needs. Now, I’m not gonna sit here and refute each and every point. Just some that I find ridiculous. Like this one, where people claim that criminals use Assault rifles (Ar-15s, AK-47/74s, SCARs, etc)

Nationally, “assault weapons” were used in 1.4% of crimes involving firearms and
0.25% of all violent crime before the enactment of any national or state “assault
weapons” ban

Think about it. That’s .25% of all violent crimes committed. A statistical dead end. Not an issue.

And here’s another discussing the UK’s near total ban on guns

Over the last century, the British crime rate was largely unchanged. In the late
nineteenth century, the per capita homicide rate in Britain was between 1.0 and 1.5 per
100,000. In the late twentieth century, after a near ban on gun ownership, the homicide
rate is around 1.4. This shows that the homicide rate does not vary with either the level
of gun control or gun availability

So, violent crime does not drop after guns are (lets be honest here) banned. What’s the point? To make people feel safe? Screw that, I’d much rather be safe.

And there are people that believe that private citizen ownership of firearms do not prevent crimes, well here’s something that will make you think.

Every year, people in the United States use guns to defend themselves against
criminals an estimated 2,500,000 times – more than 6,500 people a day, or once every 13

Of the 2,500,000 times citizens use guns to defend themselves, 92% merely brandish their gun or fire a warning shot to scare
off their attacker.

and if you think that only police should have guns, keep this in mind.

11% of police shootings kill an innocent person - about 2% of shootings by citizens
kill an innocent person

That’s right. you are 5 times more likely to be killed by a cop defending himself than a private citizen defending himself.  Well, I’m gonna end this soon. before I do however, I just have one final argument. The police are not obligated to protect an individual. Not at all. In The Case of Warren V. District of Columbia Metropolitan police department, the court found that: courts have without exception concluded that when a municipality or other governmental entity undertakes to furnish police services, it assumes a duty only to the public at large and not to individual members of the community.’

Here’s some quotes to finish this blog post off. From our VP Joe Biden: “Banning guns is an idea whose time has come.

And some others such as the ACLU (They have a very misleading name as private firearm ownership is a civil liberty)

“We urge passage of federal legislation ... to prohibit ... the private ownership and
possession of handgun

And I’ll end this with a quote from George Orwell

The totalitarian states can do great things, but there is one thing they cannot do: they
cannot give the factory-worker a rifle and tell him to take it home and keep it in his
bedroom. That rifle, hanging on the wall of the working-class flat or laborer’s
cottage, is the symbol of democracy. It is our job to see that it stays there.

Trust me, there’s plenty more information available and I’ve got the link right here. No bullshit just facts and their sources for your own reference. So go check it out. Read it. Become aware, then go out to a range and shoot a gun. You may find it to be incredibly relaxing (I know I do)

PS: Here’s the link.

if you can't guess what I will be ranting about tomorrow, it will be about the second amendment.

Iraq War Veteran serves two tours. Gets shot 60 times by SWAT

Posted in libertarian issues with tags , , , on May 21, 2011 by Vasilieos

This tragic incident proves why we need to end the war on drugs. An innocent Marine, who served in Iraq twice, was shot 60 times by SWAT. The War on Drugs gave the police unlimited latitude in this case and they did not even attempt to present their search warrant to Guerena. People, especially those on the left, continually complain about the PATRIOT Act. But why won’t they come out against the War on Drugs when that does virtually the same thing.

Ultimately, what the police did find was a few guns and some body armor. None of which are illegal. This case will come down to the SWAT and police’s word against the word of Guerena’s surviving family members. SWAT will get away with murder, a woman will be widowed, and a son will go without a father.

Such a shame.

EDIT: Here’s a link to the pima county sheriff’s office statement. Notice two things. 1. Guerena’s safety was on. He could not have fired first. the second thing is that at the very end the statement basically says its wrong to question the police.

This is my first blog. I never thought I would write one, but seeing how much I post to facebook I think I should. Posts here will vary. Sometimes political, sometimes religious, sometimes nothing but a rant or rave. So keep reading.

Here’s some YouTube channels and blogs you should check out: (PZ Myers is a professor of Biology out in Minnesota and a well-known Atheist) (seriously, watch “Why do people laugh at creationists”. They are hilarious) (No introduction necessary, it’s Richard Dawkins)
